A stakeholder calls for preservation of culture

North-Western Development Council of Elders Chairperson, Kenneth Kapata says there is need to preserve the country’s cultural identity through passing on information to the younger generation.

Mr Kapata told ZANIS in an interview today that culture diversity is cardinal in upholding a nation’s identity.

He explained that Zambia is what it is today because of the forefathers who preserved the country’s culture.

” Our fore fathers respected our culture and we need to emulate that,” said Mr Kapata.

He added that the country’s culture can be observed through the holding of traditional ceremonies.

” Different tribes have different cultures that they practice and that is an important aspect of ethnicity,” he stated.

Mr Kapata has encouraged elders across the country to take time to inculcate traditional norms and values in youths.

He stated that for culture to be preserved, it should be passed on to the younger generation.

” Take interest in knowing about your culture that will help you to have an identity,” Mr Kapata said.

Mr Kapata said culture also plays an important role in upholding unity in the nation.

” We have been a peaceful country for many years and   different tribes have learnt to coexist,” he said.

Mr Kapata noted that as the world commemorates international Culture Diversity day, there is need for people across the world to respect each other’s culture in order to dialogue and live in peace and harmony
