The Energy Regulation Board (ERB) has assured that the country has sufficient fuel stock and has dispelled reports by some sections of the media on fuel shortages.
ERB Board Chairperson James Banda stated that with over 36 million litres of diesel, over 8 million litres of petrol and over 1 million litres of jet fuel, the country is sufficiently covered for at least 10 days.
ZANIS reports that Mr. Banda clarified that the sporadic shortage being experienced in some parts of the country is as a result of logistical challenges being faced by Oil Marketing Companies such as delays in offloading the product at the port in Beira and the change of transporting route from Zimbabwe to Chanida, which is longer and slower, causing the delay in arrival of the products.
The Board Chair has however assured that the ERB is working closely with OMCs and government institutions such as ZESCO, ZRA and RTSA to ensure that the products are quickly brought into the country.
He explained that the Chanida border will operate for 24 hours and ZESCO has agreed to provide power to the border in order for fuel tankers to clear quickly while RTSA has granted them extended driving hours.
