Nakonde District has recorded an increase in malaria cases as compared to similar periods in the previous years.

Nakonde District Health Director, Philip Munkonge, has revealed that the district recorded an increase in the incidence rate of malaria from 100.6 in the last quarter of 2022 to 193.6 per 1000 population during the same period in 2023.

However, Dr Mukonge assured that the district has put up measures to reduce the soaring numbers of malaria, as the district stands at one hundred percent distribution of Insecticide Treated Nets (ITNs).

“As Nakonde District, we have observed an increase in the incidence of malaria in the district, this is in comparison to similar periods in the previous years,” he said.

Meanwhile, Acting Malaria Elimination Officer, Abraham Milambo, highlighted some measures being put in place to contain the disease, which includes monitoring the utilisation of ITNs.

Mr Milambo disclosed that the district has come up with stakeholder engagement in order to increase awareness on the access to malaria services.

He further stated that the district has put up a test and treat in the community known as component D which is done by trained community members.

“We are also doing social behavioural change activity where we are addressing drugs adherence, known as the Community Change Agents,” Mr Milambo said.
