Women encouraged to participate in politics

Minister of Local and Rural Development Gary Nkombo says government is concerned with the low proportion of women in decision making positions.

Mr Nkombo observed that women’s interests are not well represented or prioritised as a result of the low representation.

He called for urgent action in a bid to remedy the prevailing situation.

Mr Nkombo expressed optimism that with more representation of women in decision making structures and governance processes will help in ensuring that their needs and interests are considered.

Mr Nkombo however indicated that government remains committed to promote an inclusive and gender responsive local government system that facilitates equal and equitable provision of social and developmental services.

He has since called on women to join politics and participate in governance.

Mr Nkombo said this when he officiated at the global partners group meeting of partnerships for municipal innovation women in local leadership projects.

And speaking earlier Head of Office at Canadian High Commission in Zambia, Corry Van Gaal disclosed that his government has allocated 26 million dollars for the project which is being implemented in five countries Benin, Cambodia, Ghana, Sri Lanka and Zambia.

Ms. Gaal said the aim of the project is to change the perception of society on women’s participation in governance processes.

She commended government for initiating laws that encourage women to participate in governance matters.

Meanwhile Local Government Association of Zambia President Vincent Lilanda thanked Canada for funding the four-year project.

Mr Lilanda said the project will greatly assist in enticing women to participate in governance issues.
