SEVEN members of the opposition Patriotic Front (PF) have defected to the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND), citing the government’s visible progress and commitment to uplifting the lives of citizens as their motivation.
The defections were announced during a community engagement at Washeni Community School in Kanchibiya District in Muchinga Province.
Speaking on behalf of the defectors, Michael Chilufya said the decision was driven by the tangible development initiatives under the UPND administration.
“We have seen notable developments under this administration, and it is clear that UPND is a party of progress. We believe this is where we can contribute meaningfully,” Mr. Chilufya said.
Meanwhile, UPND Chairman General for Special Duties, William Banda who was in the district on official duty welcomed the defectors and commended their decision to join the ruling party, assuring them of a shared vision for a better Zambia.
“You have made the right choice. UPND is committed to delivering a better Zambia for all,” he said.
As part of the event, Mr. Banda donated two wheelchairs to persons living with disabilities and bales of clothes to community members on behalf of the First Family.
And Kanchibiya District Commissioner Chrispin Chilekwa described the defections as a sign of growing confidence in the ruling party.
Mr Chilekwa expressed gratitude for the donations, describing them as transformative for the beneficiaries.
“These wheelchairs will significantly improve the lives of those who have faced challenges due to limited mobility. We are elated to receive these items,” Mr. Chilekwa said.
One of the wheelchair beneficiaries, Kashimiya Kafwanka, extended her gratitude to the First Family saying she was overwhelmed by their response.
“I never thought my cry would be heard, but today I stand here with renewed hope, thanks to this timely support,” she said.
