Mongu Municipal Council has commenced a cleaning exercise under the cash for work programme with a stern warning against littering especially in drainages.
In an interview with ZANIS, Mongu Municipal Council Assistant Public Relations Manager, Abigail Sitenge warns against throwing litter in the drainages in order to keep the Town clean.
“Cleaning and ensuring a clean environment is everybody’s responsibility so we expect people to be responsible and not dump waste anyhow and this calls for mindset change amongst the public,” Ms Sitenge said.
The Assistant Public Relations Manager added that her Council was committed to ensure that drainages were clean but unfortunately people keep on throwing litter in the drainages.
“The drainage can be cleaned today and after two days it will be full of waste. That is not our problem as council,” Ms Sitenge said.
She disclosed that all the works being done through the cash for work programme are always monitored and checked to ensure the work is correctly done before any payment is made.
Ms Sitenge has advised the businesses at Mongu Central market to dump their waste in bins which have been placed around the Tungi area.
“There is a bin around Tungi area which we empty whenever it is full but again marketeers throw waste outside the bin and residents in that area also take advantage and dump waste there causing the bin to fill up so quickly which is not supposed to be the case,” she said.
Ms Sitenge was speaking in response to concerns from the Mongu residents over the current waste in the drainages which were recently cleaned under the cash for work programme.
The residents also expressed concern on why the local authority is not collecting the waste at Tungi area being dumped by traders from Mongu central market.
