PRESIDENT Hakainde Hichilema has graced this year’s Lwiindi Chuundu Traditional ceremony of the Toka-Leya people of Senior Chief Sekute of Kazungula district in Southern province with a call on all traditional leaders to continue fostering unity across the country.
Mr Hichilema noted that the presence of more than 60 traditional leaders at this year’s Lwiindi Chuundu Traditional ceremony signifies the unity and peace the country has achieved.
The President added that it was important to value the country’s culture and traditional heritage by cherishing it.
“Unity in diversity is cardinal for the development of the country. We need to continue offering maximum support to our culture by sustaining and keeping the country’s heritage,” Mr Hichilema said.
Mr Hichilema also encouraged people to continue working hard even in times of climate change which has caused devastating effects in the agriculture and energy sectors across the country.
He said government was determined to develop in all corners of the country despite the current challenges as a result of the drought situation that hit the country.
“As government we are committed to the development of this nation, but we shall first focus on ensuring food security through promotion of irrigation to increase food production,” he explained.
The President noted that without sufficient food people cannot support other developments hence its commitment to prioritizing food security.
Earlier Southern Province Minister Credo Nanjuwa thanked the President for gracing the ceremony which is the last one in the province being celebrated this year.
Mr Nanjuwa disclosed that the ceremony received a number of visitors which included 63 royal highnesses in attendance from across the country.
He commended the President for the support he has continued to render towards the traditional ceremonies across the country.
The Provincial Minister was particularly proud of the President’s leadership especially that he has managed to deal with the drought situation in the country by introducing a number of drought emergency response programmes to mitigate the hunger crisis.
And speaking through his representative Hastings Nyambe, Senior Chief Sekute acknowledged the President’s zeal in developing the country.
“Government should be commended for improving the livelihoods of people across the country. The chiefdom is delighted to see a number of interventions being done in improving the livelihood of the people through social cash transfer, food for work and cash for work among others,” Senior Chief Sekute noted.
The Chief further acknowledged the strides that government was making to improve the lifestyles of the citizens through the increased Constituency Development Fund (CDF).
