AT least five out of 11 boreholes have been drilled in Mapatizya Constituency.

The industrial boreholes have been sunk using 2023 and 2024 Constituency Development Fund (CDF) as part of the climate resilience mitigation measures.

Zimba Town Council Assistant Public Relations Officer, Mastone Moonze, confirmed the development in a Press Release to ZANIS on Tuesday.

Mr Moonze, however, could not state the total cost of drilling the five boreholes but said the water facilities would be commissioned soon.

He assured that the remaining six water points would be sunk before the end of this year.

Mr Moonze stressed that the government, through the local authority, has intensified the drilling and equipping of climate resilient industrial boreholes funded under the 2024 Constituency Development Fund in Mapatizya Constituency to address the drought impact experienced during the 2023 – 2024 rain season.

He said among the villages that have benefited include Chilubwa in Simwatachela Ward, Gala in Chidi ward and Chalinga in Mafumba ward.

Others include Siamutwezuba School in Siamafumba ward and Siayuni village of Luyaba ward respectively.

Mr Moonze further disclosed that a named contractor is currently on the site in Chuundwe Ward drilling water.

He said this is the second attempt by the contractor following an alleged deep water table that cannot be accessed.

Recently, the Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Garry Nkombo directed all local authorities in the country to utilise the 2024 CDF to empower communities with clean drinking water in response to lack of water which is negatively affecting most communities.

Mr Nkombo assured that the government is determined to attain the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal number six which aims at providing access to safe and clean drinking water to the people.
