THE United Party for National Development (UPND) has returned the Kawama Ward in Chililabombwe District on the Copperbelt Province.
This was after the ruling party candidate Kanengu Nawa emerged victorious in the by-election with 1,626 votes while his competitor from the Socialist Party Joseph Chanda got 130 votes.
ZANIS reports that Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) Returning Officer for Kawama Ward Erina Nyirenda officially declared Kanengu Nawa as duly elected councilor for Kawama Ward at 21:43 hours.
Speaking shortly after being declared, Mr Nawa said he is ready to save the people in the area.
Meanwhile, other candidates who participated in the election are Fewdays Ntambi who stood as an independent and managed to get 38 votes and Forum for Democracy and Development FDD candidate Emmy Mwaba polled 37 votes.
Leadership Movement’s Kelvin Mulonga with 22 votes while Chungu Wesley for National Heritage Party only managed to gunner 20 votes.
