GOVERNMENT has warned against assigning its vehicles to unlicensed and inexperienced drivers.
Eastern Province Permanent, Paul Thole has expressed disappointment with the growing trend of allowing unqualified personnel to drive government vehicles.
Speaking during the tour of the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) projects in Lundazi and Chasefu on Thursday, Mr Thole said that most avoidable accidents involving government vehicles were generally caused by inexperienced drivers.
“You cannot have someone employed as an office orderly drive an ambulance,” Mr Thole stated.
Commenting on the road traffic accident involving an ambulance for Chasefu District, the Permanent Secretary sternly cautioned against careless driving adding that there is need for ambulance drivers to consider observing road traffic rules.
“In as much as we would expect ambulances to transport patients quickly enough to health facilities, we do not expect reckless driving that would end up claiming the lives that we intend to save and those of accompanying medical personnel,” said Mr Thole.
Mr Thole has since urged controllers of government transport to ensure that no unqualified and inexperienced drivers were assigned to drive government vehicles.
