Government has expressed its disappointment with management at Lwabwe Primary School for its failure to maintain the learning facility’s surroundings.
ZANIS reports that Kasama District Commissioner Annie Paul says it is disappointing to see overgrown grass around the school, a situation she says poses a health danger to pupils and staff at the institution.
Speaking when she made an impromptu visit to the school Mrs Paul said it is unacceptable that since schools opened, management has not taken measures to clean the school surroundings.
“The surroundings at this school possess a danger of disease outbreaks such as malaria because of the grass which has overgrown thereby making it a breeding area for mosquitoes,” she observed.
The District Commissioner also noted with disappointment that the school has failed to even procure a national flag despite the institution receiving the grant.
She has since given a one-week ultimatum to management to clean the school surrounding and buy a new flag.
And Lwabwe Primary School Head teacher Richard Mwaba revealed that the school has been vulnerable to vandalism from the surrounding community.
Mr Mwaba indicated that the school recently fixed window panes but that the window panes were stolen by unknown people.
“The surrounding community do trespass at our institution and vandalize the infrastructure which has affected us so much, recently we had replaced panes but they were vandalised by unknown people, the matter was reported to police but nothing yet has done in terms of the culprits being arrested,” he disclosed.
He added that the school had procured a new flag but it was stolen hence resorting to use of the old flag.
Mr Mwaba has since assured the district commissioner that the school will have its surroundings worked on within a week.
He indicated that management has also procured tins of paint which will be used to paint the school.
The Head teacher also appealed to the district commissioner to help engage the community so that they can desist from vandalising school infrastructure.
