Govt. commits itself to improving workers’ labour conditions

Government says it is committed to ensuring improved working conditions in the country.

Muchinga Province Minister Henry Sikazwe says this is aimed at bettering livelihoods of all workers in order for them to meet the rising costs of living.

The Minister said this  during the 2024 labour day commemorations held under the theme: Building resilience: Workers at the Heart of Zambia’s Economic Recovery’ , at Chinsali’s President’s park today.

Stressing that workers are key in moving  governments economic agenda, the minister further advised civil servants to continue executing their duties professionally and desist from involving themselves in partisan politics.

“I wish to congratulate everyone who will be awarded today for their immense contribution to the public service,” he said.

And workers play a significant role towards implementing governments policies aimed at the country’s economic recovery, said Zambia Federations of Employers (ZFE) representative Edgar Mwanza.

Mr Mwanza reasoned that workers contribution cannot not go unrecognised because it also helps them to remain productive while giving a service to the country.

Employers must therefore create an enabling environment by ensuring  better wages for the workers to be productive in their various sectors.

“We further wish to commend President Hakainde Hichilema for achieving the debt restructuring which was a burden to our country and also negatively affected our workers,” he said

Meanwhile, Federation of Free Trade Union of Zambia (FFTUZ) Vice President Charity Kampamba appealed to workers to help facilitate governments efforts of moving the wheels of the economy forward through professionalism.

Ms Kampamba appreciated the government for its commitment to economic recovery, including efforts to address the debt burden.

“We have observed Governments significant economic agenda of improving the livelihoods for our workers through various polices and directives and for that, we will continue to appreciate as a labour movement,” she added.

And Zambia Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) Muchinga regional coordinator Nondo Kasanda applauded Government for the increased employment levels that the new dawn administration has achieved.

Mr Kasanda said the increased employment levels in the education and health sectors since assuming office in 2021 is highly commendable.
